English Unit Review 4 and National Day announcements

Important Announcements:
(as made in the class on 7-August):

1) English Unit Review 4 was given out. Please complete the corrections (for those who were not in school).
We have done not as well as before. The average mark is at 72.6% as compared to UR3 where we stood at an average of 76.8%.

The synthesis component is one major factor that pulls down the marks. We have to be very careful when completing this component.

The other component -- Open ended comprehension. For this section, some answers were not given full marks. We have to answer the questions directly which is not an easy task for some of them.

Nevertheless, the learning points are more important. Reading for understanding is crucial for open-ended comprehension. For synthesis. It is quite similar to doing Maths exercise. We need to do, re-do, and practice more on Synthesis.

2) Composition - The second piece of composition given out was much written as compared to the first one. We need more practice, and I'll try to see if we can have composition writing every 1-2 weeks.
To all: Please re-write your composition as corrections. For those whom I have approached you to type out your composition, I am looking forward to seeing your composition pinned up at the back of the wall. :)

3) Spelling - we'll continue Spelling next Tuesday. Please come prepared. For the extra words, we are still at these words below:
a) immediately
b) an ambulance
c) porridge
d) stomachache
e) hospital
f) grimaced in pain

4) Maths: we are running a bit out of time, we may increase the pace for the learning of Money as there are 2 school holidays next week. Please kindly be prepared and come ready.

5) Extra supplementary lessons: Do note that we only have lessons next Tuesday and Wednesday.  Thursday's lesson will be re-shuffled to Tuesday.

Happy National Day. :)

No homework was given yesterday to celebrate the National Day.

Cheers,
Mdm Chan

National Day Songs

Dear all,

For the national day celebrations on 8th August, please remember to bring a Singapore flag. For those without a flag, you can make your own flag.

Parents are not invited officially as we do not have sufficient space with the upgrading going on. However, if you would like to join in with us, please join us together on that day too! :) Look forward to seeing everyone on the day. You are highly encouraged to come to school in a red shirt and p.e shorts.

We also need to practise singing those National Day songs. Other than Home, we need to know how to sing these songs: munnaeru vaalibaa
Xiao ren wu de xin sheng  (lyrics) another URL with lyrics and Chinese words, Chan Mali Chan (lyrics)

The amazing woman - Oh Siew May

The talk by our VP - Mdm Shanti.

This is the person who is invited for the talk tomorrow for the A.M. assembly. Oh Siew May.

Scaling Walls is the book she has written --  She has cerebral palsy. Life has thrown her with many challenges, and yet, she has never give up.
Her facebook account is here.

One thing I have learnt from the talk yesterday is "our life is like a mountain. some days can be tougher, some days can be easier. all we need to do is keep moving no matter what happens, and one day, we will make it to our destination. one must have a dream to keep going"

Without dreams, life is meaningless.

Do read more about her if you have the time.

Cheers,
Mdm Chan

Comments on the Composition

Dear all,

Please note that the present tense, past tense and the participle has been given out.
Soft copy:  http://www.englishforeveryone.org/PDFs/irregular%20verbs%20chart%20-%20%20alphabetical%20order.pdf

Spelling on the past tense will be given out on selected words.

Composition:
10 marks is allocated for composition in the final year examination. In an effort to boost the proficiency level of writing in the class, class writing is given out every week.

4 marks on language component and 6 marks for content.

Things to note:
1) Write based on the picture. There are some who have missed out key points and they are penalised on the content.
2) Tenses should be in the past, unless it is referring to the future or the present.
3) A minimum of 3 paragraphs is required.
4) Handwriting should be neat and legible.

Feedback on the English Unit Review:
1) Synthesis - And, But, Because. These can be quite difficult for some. We will need to work on these areas.
2) Simple past and present tense.
To sing (and no other forms such as sang, sings, singing)
She sings everyday.
Last night, she sang.
There are still some who are grappling with the above sentences.  Please revise on this. This is very important for English.

Regards,
Mdm Chan

PS: Next week is the Maths test for Multiplying and Dividing by 4, 5 and 10.
Please prepare.
